Background
The Foundation was established in 1990 in honor of the renowned Russian cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky (1903-1976). Piatigorsky believed that music is not a luxury for an elite few but a necessity of life for all. Since its inception, the Foundation has presented over 1,700 concerts bringing live classical music to hundreds of thousands of people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend such performances.
Concert Tours
The Piatigorsky Foundation fulfills its mission through state-based concert tours. A tour consists of ten to twelve concerts typically performed by two musicians. It is common for the Foundation to return to each state two to three times per season, making live classical music an ongoing part of community life. Venues include retirement communities, schools, churches, synagogues, workplaces, prisons, libraries, museums and community centers . . . virtually anywhere people gather. The hour-long concerts take place in relaxed and intimate settings. The musicians introduce their programs giving helpful insights into the works that they will perform. The performances are both entertaining and educational.
Areas Served
During the 2001-2002 concert season, the Foundation presented 250 concerts for over 25,000 people in 12 states: Florida, Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and Washington. Next season, we will increase the number of concerts to 300 and include venues in three new states: Arizona, Oklahoma and Minnesota.
